Education
Education is a high priority. Our government has made extensive investments to create and maintain a world-class system of public education, a system where children are encouraged to learn and excel. Memorial University of Newfoundland is the largest in eastern Canada with over 100 degree programmes, a student enrollment of 17,000, and is listed as one of the top six in Canada for cooperative education.
Economy
Our economy is booming – our rich natural resources had us leading Canada in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2007, and this growth is expected to continue as we further develop major projects in the oil and gas sector (Hibernia, Terra Nova, White Rose, Hebron, and Come-By-Chance Refinery) hydro-electricity, and mining (nickel, gold, uranium, diamonds). We still offer a cost of living that is lower than that in other parts of Canada, a relaxed atmosphere, a usual commute of 20 minutes, and fun and activities for the whole family.
Shaped by the sea, the province offers wide-open spaces with stunning scenery and breathtaking landscapes – much of it still unspoiled and pristine. Our people are hard working with strong family ties and we celebrate our culture through art, food, social gatherings and music.
