Skills shortages hurt Canadian businesses

A recent study shows 68% of small businesses in Canada expect labour shortage to worsen.

The study, conducted by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), also shows 91% of the shortages in small to medium businesses are in non-professional categories.

“This means Canada is not welcoming people with the skills businesses are asking for at a time when employers are desperately short of workers,” comments Dan Kelly, vice-president of CFIB for Western Canada.

Kelly adds that the immigration system, in its current state, is “complicated, slow and frustrating”.

According to the study, based on a survey of nearly 12,000 small businesses in the country, skills shortages are causing companies to operate with too few employees and miss out on business opportunities as a result.
