Canada’s population has hit the 34 million mark for the first time.
On 1 April, the population count was at 34,019,000, an addition of 88,000 since the beginning of the year. Migrants make up over two-thirds of the growth.
The Canadian government has made immigration as one of its top priorities, mainly due to the country’s ageing population and the high number of baby boomers leaving the workforce.
Population growth was higher in the western provinces. Saskatchewan, for example, experienced its biggest increase since 1972.
