The provincial government of Ontario has announced changes to its Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), known as Opportunities Ontario.
With these changes, international students who obtain PhDs from publicly-funded universities in the province no longer need a job offer to be eligible for an Ontario Provincial Nomination Certificate.
The provincial government hopes this update will bring more skilled migrants to the province. The change comes after a report in February predicated an extreme shortage of skilled workers to hit the country in general, with Ontario being one of the most affected provinces.
In the same month, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty also announced the intention to create a five-year plan to fight skills shortages in the province and turn Ontario into an education mecca.
