Alternative employment ideas
Employment and business opportunities are at an all-time high in Canada. Skilled workers, investors, and entrepreneurs are taking full advantage of them to migrate into Canada. Despite this robust influx, there are still jobs available. Amongst the many positions with abundant openings are those that require few or no skills. Many potential employees come into the country as students, or as spouses of workers who qualify for the skilled worker or business visas.
Spouses may be qualified in their own fields, but many are also available for employment in jobs such as waiter/waitress and other food service positions, caretakers, home and office maids, store clerks, sanitation workers, janitors, workers on assembly lines, and some construction positions. The spouses and common-law partners of migrants who are in Canada on a Skilled Worker visa may apply for a work permit in these areas.
Students who are on visa in Canada are allowed to look for employment off campus after they have been in Canada for six months, but because they are still students they lack the full array of skills in their field of education. They are either hired as interns at entry-level wages or they turn to unskilled labour to supplement their finances while still studying. They may be hired part time during the school year and full time during holiday breaks.
A work permit is needed if student employment takes place off campus. If the academic program in which the student is enrolled requires work in the field of study as part of the program, the student will need a Co-op work permit. This particular work permit is limited to this type of work only and cannot be used for any other type of work. Students who complete their studies at a University have the option of working for either one or two years in Canada, depending on their location. Spouses and common-law partners of students may also apply for work permits.
Young people from abroad may also enter Canada on a Working Holiday, whereby they find temporary work while visiting in the country. These workers seek employment primarily in the unskilled areas in order to supplement their traveling expenses.
In business or skilled worker areas where the need for workers or business people is particularly great, the process for immigration has been simplified and expedited in order to supply the needed work force. Examples of this include labour in the construction industry and IT workers in the red-hot computer industry.
