Education on Prince Edward Island

As with all other provinces and territories, the education system of Prince Edward Island is the responsibility of the provincial government. The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is responsible for the administration of school institutions in the province.

There are three school boards on Prince Edward Island – two of them are English-based, while one is French-based. Western School Board covers students in Prince and Queens County, while Eastern School District looks after students in Kings and Queens Counties. The French School Board operates schools across the island.

School is mandatory for children aged between six and 16 years. There are 64 public English schools and six public French schools in Prince Edward Island.

The province has one university – the University of Prince Edward Island – that can grant degrees, and two community colleges.
