Education in Newfoundland and Labrador
Education in Newfoundland and Labrador is the responsibility of the province’s Department of Education, which covers early childhood learning, the K-12 system, post-secondary education and skills training, and adult literacy. Public schools are also administered by the school boards.
School is free for all Canadian citizens and permanent residents until the age of 18 years old, and it is mandatory between the ages of six and 16.
There are 280 public schools in the province, divided as follows:
- 14 primary
- 108 elementary
- 21 intermediate
- 85 all grade
- 27 high
- 25 senior high
There are two public post-secondary institutions in Newfoundland and Labrador:
- Memorial University of Newfoundland
- College of the North Atlantic
The province also has 25 private training institutions.
