Education in New Brunswick

The Department of New Brunswick is responsible for the administration of the public education system in the province, from kindergarten through grade 12. New Brunswick is Canada’s only officially bilingual province and it has both anglophone and francophone school districts.

There are 14 school districts – five French and nine English.

Education in New Brunswick is free for all Canadian citizens and permanent residents. The province is known for its high quality education, repeatedly scoring the highest high school education rate in the country.

School is compulsory for children between the ages of six and 16 years.

The Department of Post Secondary Education, Training and Labour is responsible for higher education in the province. New Brunswick is home to the first English-speaking university in Canada – the University of New Brunswick.

There are four public and three private chartered universities in the province, as well as one community college.
