Education in Alberta
As with all other provinces and territories in Canada, the education system in Alberta is administered by the local government.
The provincial department of education, Alberta Education, prepares the curriculum that all public and separate school boards, charter schools, private schools and home schools follow. All teachers are certificated by Alberta Education.
Edmonton is home to the University of Alberta, the oldest and largest tertiary education institution in the province (the second largest being the University of Calgary). The province also counts with the University of Lethbridge, Athabasca University (which focus on distance learning), McEwan University and Mount Royal University (two former colleges that the government turned into universities).
There are also 13 colleges in the province that receive direct public funding, as well as two technical institutes and a large private education sector.
Higher education institutions are the responsibility of the Ministry of Advanced Education & Technology.
